When mature, the cones turn a reddish-brown color, gradually darkening to a deep brown as they age. The cone’s surface features a tightly packed, overlapping needle-like scale pattern that is around 1 inch (2.5 cm) long and 0.25 inches (6 mm) wide. Each cone typically contains between 100-150 scales, which overlap each other to form a tight, compact mass. The cones take approximately 12-14 months to mature from pollination.
